A Special Message From Shannon Albinio

Dear Skateworld Supporters,

It was brought to our attention last week that Bayside Community Center has been targeted by malicious emails and most recently a hateful sign was left on their front door. While it is unknown who the responsible party is, I can only guess their reason was to get attention. I would like to make very clear that Skateworld and the Friends of Skateworld do not in any way support or condone this type of behavior. From day one, we have asked our supporters to be respectful in their comments, postings and rally signs. This type of behavior does nothing to help our cause. We have never personally attacked Bayside and do not wish any ill will towards them. I fully understand everyone’s frustration with the situation. We all want to save Skateworld. and there are proper ways in which to do this.

I would like to ask on behalf of the Friends of Skateworld that everyone please refrain from any similar messages to Bayside and its employees. Disrespectful behavior like this is not tolerated at Skateworld and won’t be tolerated with the group working so hard to keep the rink open for your continued enjoyment for years to come. We need to keep our fight to save Skateworld alive in a positive way.

I thank you for your time and your continued support of Skateworld.

Sincerely,

Shannon Albinio

It Was A Birthday Blast From the Past!

Last night's Roller Disco Birthday Party was a ton of fun! So many great 70's outfits and some great tunes to skate to! What a wonderful turnout of people who wanted to say "happy birthday" to Skateworld. Some came to skate, and others were there simply to show their support of San Diego's last roller rink. Congratulations to the winners of the costume contest - though there were no losers, everyone received a free pass to any skate session at Skateworld. Party guests also enjoyed some birthday cake and received some disco party beads to add even more color to their outfits. All in all, it was a great time! In case you missed the festivities, there are some great photos on Facebook. A big thank you to photographer George Medina who took some super pictures! Visit him on Facebook and take a look! So, what's next for Skateworld? Stay tuned for more fun events and get out on the floor and skate! They have weekly skate sessions and are available for special events. Be sure to come and check out the San Diego Roller Derby bout this Saturday for some great women's roller derby action! Game starts at 5:30 pm and tickets are just $12. Thank you to all our friends who continue to support Skateworld. We couldn't do it without you! See you next time!

Skateworld Rally!

Welcome, Friends of Skateworld!

Skateworld, the last remaining roller rink in the city of San Diego, is in danger of losing its lease. The San Diego Redevelopment Agency has an exclusive negotiation agreement with a private development company (MRW) for the property on which Skateworld is located. This company has indicated that they plan to redevelop the property and the future of Skateworld is uncertain.

Skateworld has been an outstanding member of the Linda Vista community for nearly 35 years. This establishment attracts visitors from all over San Diego County and has made many positive contributions to the public. Skateworld hosts fundraisers for various causes, provides family-friendly activities, and employs many who would not find jobs elsewhere, such as teens with no previous work history. Businesses adjacent to the rink are also supported by Skateworld’s patrons. Many San Diegans, who remember skating there as children, now take their own families to Skateworld. Closing this rink would be a devastating loss for all of San Diego County.

Please join all of us who love Skateworld by voicing your support of the rink to the San Diego City Council. The community of Linda Vista is represented by 6th District Councilmember Donna Frye. Her phone number-
619-236-6616; email- donnafrye@sandiego.gov. Tell Ms. Frye that you do not want to see Skateworld leave Linda Vista! You can also show your support by signing our petition that will be presented to the City Council at a later date. There is no age limit – everyone is eligible to sign. You can sign the petition at Skateworld, or, if you would like to help collect signatures, you can download a petition packet! We've also started an online petition! All help is appreciated! Also, don't forget to join the "Friends of Skateworld Roller Rink" group on Facebook & follow our tweets on Twitter! We will be updating this blog often, so check back soon for all the latest info! Thanks for your support!
