Continue to Show Your Support For Skateworld! Linda Vista Town Council Meeting June 16th!

MRW has backed out of negotiations with the city, so now what? Nobody knows for sure. This is the time to let District 6 Councilmember Lori Zapf hear from you! Let her know that you want to see Skateworld stay open as a full-time skating rink, not as a multi-purpose facility with skating there for only a few hours a week! On June 16th there is a Linda Vista Town Council meeting scheduled to take place at the Baha'i Center in Linda Vista. Assemblymember Toni Atkins will also be in attendance. Show your continued support for Skateworld! We hope to see you there and at the rink!

If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can email Lori at: loriezapf@sandiego.gov

Check Out Some Roller Derby Action and Help Save Skateworld!

That's right! The Friends of Skateworld will be the charitable group being promoted at this month's San Diego Roller Derby bout! SDRD helps out a local charitable cause at each of their home bouts - and this month it's the Friends of Skateworld! You will not want to miss this event! The ladies of SDRD will be taking on the Rage City Rollergirls - from Anchorage, Alaska! Not only will you enjoy some great roller derby, but there will also be opportunity drawings where you have a chance to win some great prizes! We'll also have a booth where you can get more info. about what's been happening in this fight to save Skateworld, pick up a "Save Our Skateworld" t-shirt, wristband, and fill out a letter of support, if you haven't already. All the action happens on Saturday, March 12th. Tickets are $12 general admission and children 5 and under are FREE! A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to the FOSW to help in our efforts to save this rink! Your ticket also gets you entry to the open skate session following the bout, so you can stay and skate afterward (skate rental is an extra $4). If that's not for you, then be sure to check out the after party where you can have a chance to hang out with all the derby gals (details TBA). To purchase tickets online please visit: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/143746 -or- pick up tickets in advance at the Skateworld box office! We hope to see you there!

Your Input Is Requested!!

In case you were unable to attend last night's "Community Workshop" event hosted by MRW, the San Diego Redevelopment Agency, and Bayside Community Center, there is still time to share your opinions! Below is a link to the handout from the workshop. Those who attended were asked to share their ideas as to what "uses" we would like to see incorporated into their proposed project. They have asked for community input, so let's give it! Whether you live in Linda Vista, or not, if you are part of the skating community, or a supporter of someone who is - then you need to let them know what you think! These agencies are making decisions that will effect us all - not just those who live in Linda Vista. Please take a few minutes and fill out the worksheet. Let your ideas be heard!

Here's the link to the Questionnaire! (Word doc)

Community Workshop – January 31, 2011

You are invited to a Community Workshop! (PDF)

Please consider participating in this meeting where we will be discussing the following items:

  1. The kind of retail and commercial uses you would like to see in the project beyond those already there;
  2. The type of activities you would like to have in the multi-purpose community hall;
  3. The kind of services, classes, and functions you envision for the portion of the project that would serve as a community center; and
  4. The components of the public areas of the project.

While there are many factors that govern what can happen at the site, the project team wants to hear your ideas. Please consider joining this effort and sharing your thoughts!

A Special Message From Shannon Albinio

Dear Skateworld Supporters,

It was brought to our attention last week that Bayside Community Center has been targeted by malicious emails and most recently a hateful sign was left on their front door. While it is unknown who the responsible party is, I can only guess their reason was to get attention. I would like to make very clear that Skateworld and the Friends of Skateworld do not in any way support or condone this type of behavior. From day one, we have asked our supporters to be respectful in their comments, postings and rally signs. This type of behavior does nothing to help our cause. We have never personally attacked Bayside and do not wish any ill will towards them. I fully understand everyone’s frustration with the situation. We all want to save Skateworld. and there are proper ways in which to do this.

I would like to ask on behalf of the Friends of Skateworld that everyone please refrain from any similar messages to Bayside and its employees. Disrespectful behavior like this is not tolerated at Skateworld and won’t be tolerated with the group working so hard to keep the rink open for your continued enjoyment for years to come. We need to keep our fight to save Skateworld alive in a positive way.

I thank you for your time and your continued support of Skateworld.

Sincerely,

Shannon Albinio
